Pump Your Tank Regularly
It is recommended to have your tank pumped every two to three years, given ordinary use. However, if you look in your tank and see that you have 4" to 5" of scum floating on top of the water, you should pump your tank immediately. If you see no scum layer on top, this is not necessarily an indication that you do not need to pump your tank, as there may be a considerable amount of sludge at the bottom of the tank that you cannot see.
Check for Proper Installation of the OWTS
When the Onsite Wastewater Treatment System (OWTS) is improperly installed and maintained, liquid wastes may overflow onto the surface of the ground, or the plumbing in the home may often clog or stop-up. These overflows not only create offensive odors, but if the effluent forms a pond on the surface of the ground or is carried away in open ditches or streams, this could contribute to neighborhood health problems as well.
Monitor Your System
Neglect of the septic tank is the most frequent cause of damage to a soil absorption unit. When a tank is not cleaned, solids and scum build up to a point where they are carried into the underground soil absorption system; there they block the flow of liquid into the soil. When this happens, the soil absorption system must be rebuilt, which amounts up to ($15,000 - $40,000).
